The origins of acupuncture in China can be traced back at least 2000 years, making it one of the oldest and most long-standing health care systems in the world. Today, acupuncture is an effective, natural and safe form of therapy that is becoming an increasingly popular form of health care, being used by people from a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds.
Acupuncture is used to encourage natural healing, improve mood and energy, reduce or relieve pain and improve function of affected areas of the body. It is often successfully used as an alternative to medications or even surgery. Relief is often obtained with acupuncture when traditional medical therapy has failed.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese herbal medicine is a formula science that has been honed over thousands of years through observation, clinical trial and error, and through direct knowing by the sages of old. Chinese herbs are used to treat a wide variety of diseases from the common cold, menstrual pain, headaches, to severe trauma. Formulas are often prescribed in conjunction with acupuncture treatments and come in several different forms including pills, granules and tinctures.
Moxibustion or simply “moxa”, is a plant called mugwort, artemisia vulgaris, that is dried, aged, and ground into a fluffy, spongy consistency before it is ready to be applied as the medical therapy of moxibustion.
It is then burned directly or indirectly on acupoints of the body and removed before it burns down to the skin. The effect is a warming and moving of blood and qi in the body. This is an especially effective therapy in cold and damp climates and conditions, musculo-skeletal issues, arthritis, joint pain, as well as for women’s health.
Cupping has been used in many parts of the world for thousands of years. This modality employs the use of plastic or glass cups to induce a “suction” effect on different parts of the body, mostly the back. it helps to move fluids and blood thereby releasing tension in tight sore muscles as well as detoxifying. Cupping is also used for colds, phelgm in the lungs and to effectively treat asthma.
Shiatsu is a Japanese form of massage based on Chinese medical principles. The energy channels, or meridians, are pathways that connect the rest of the body with the major body organs. Additionally, there exist (acupuncture) points along these pathways where body energy pools. This sets the stage for places in the body that hold excess energy as well as areas that become deficient. With a focus on deep tissues, but also the energy channels and points, Shiatsu is both physically and energetically oriented.
